The event featured dance performances, a Bible competition, and a graduation ceremony
Recently, the Universal Teen Force (UTF) in Sri Lanka held the 2026 Teen Connection, which brought together dozens of families for a special programme aimed at teenagers. The gathering featured dance performances, the inaugural Bible Challenge, and a graduation ceremony for teenagers who have completed the UTF stage and are moving on to the Victory Youth Group (VYG).
Pastor Joseph Ouverney, who oversees the Universal Church in Sri Lanka, led the gathering. During the “Talk with Teen” segment, he shared part of his personal story and explained to the teenagers why having guidance during this phase of life can make all the difference.
The importance of the UTF
The Pastor shared that when he was a teenager, the UTF did not yet exist. Therefore, he highlighted the importance of the group in providing guidance for young people, especially nowadays. He also recalled that he strayed from the faith during the transition from childhood to adolescence, when he left Sunday School and did not have the support currently offered by the UTF.
In light of this, he advised the teenagers to make the most of this phase to learn, make good choices, and not waste time on things that add no value.
Subsequently, Pastor Felipe Fernandes, responsible for the UTF in Sri Lanka, emphasised the importance of honouring one’s parents and choosing the truth, even when that decision may bring consequences.
“Walking in the truth with everyone is the only way to avoid trouble and build a blessed life.”
Alongside the messages, the gathering also featured moments of lighthearted fun. Right at the opening, UTF and YPG members put on choreographed dance routines. Afterwards, the teenagers took part in the Bible Challenge, which featured three elimination rounds before reaching the grand final.
At the end of the competition, 15-year-old Alakshiya Menom claimed first place. She is also currently experiencing the transition from the UTF to the YPG. According to her, the experience brought new lessons and reinforced the vital role the UTF has played in her life. As a prize, she received a trophy and a YPG t-shirt.
Teenagers share their thoughts on the experience
Finally, a few teenagers shared their impressions of the event.
For 12 year old Madhav Krishha Parumal, the programme was extra special: “This event has become my favourite; it was the best one for me!”
Meanwhile, 13 year old Rukaiya Ikram summed up her experience by saying: “I’ve never seen anything like it!”
In an interview with us, Pastor Felipe explained how the work with teenagers is carried out. According to him, the group strives to stay close to the young people and help them face the challenges of this stage in life.
“Teenagers need support, someone to teach them and show them the right path. That is what we aim to do. Alongside our weekly meetings, where we hold ‘Straight Talk’ sessions, we are also studying the book ‘Nothing to Lose’ with them. Our meetings take place on Fridays and Sundays, and we also offer English and football workshops.”
Furthermore, the Pastor shared that his own experience within the Church also motivates him to care for the new generation.
“As a product of the UTF myself, I consider it a privilege to be here, because we are preparing the future. They need guidance in such difficult times. Many of them have nobody looking out for them—just God and us. That is precisely what motivates us to keep fighting for the transformation of every single one of them.”
UTF has a variety of activities; stay connected with us and participate.
